Dear Families: More Practice Tips!

Dear SSM Families-

We continue to prepare  together for the coming SSM semester: group classes begin after the summer hiatus on September 9 at MYARts and September 8 CPC.

Here is my penultimate August post on practice strategies.
During the school year Dear SSM families will appear with topics throughout the year to help support YOU, the adults who journey alongside the learner, reinforcing and assisting  their musical study with us at Suzuki Strings of Madison.

New this year will be a 9 month series specifically focused on supporting posts for  our newest pre-twinkle familes.  This will come out at the end of each month starting in September.

TIPS FOR EMPOWERMENT
 – create interest and curiosity in the practice session
~record first takes in three different spots of your working piece, and listen back to see and hear if there are similarities for goal setting
~treat feedback as opportunity and not criticism , string educator Mimi Zweig always  says – errors are just data !

TIPS FOR EFFIEICENCY
-video yourself ( as above ) but this time do it as a reference of refinement –
First take and then another take after you’ve spent time practicing. Notice and celebrate the positive changes and note what work lies ahead for tomorrow’s practice.
-videoing is really a great help ! This time record a spot three times BUT with three separate concentrated intents.
1. Pay attention to intonation
2. Pay attention to tone, sound production , character
3. Pay attention to clarity of pulse and rhythm

TIPS FOR JOY
– have a practice buddy.
Someone at your working level or maybe an older SSM mentor student.
~decide to practice at the same time
~text an emoji to check in your  completed your practice
-video record yourself each week for a month on a specific piece or part of a piece
Do this once a week .
DO NOT LISTEN BACK UNTIL YOU HAVE A MONTH OF RECORDINGS.
Then – Listen to your journey !

Video or sound recording is such a useful tool for either immediate feedback or long term processing on your progress.

With a twinkling spirit,
Diana
May the blossoms of your practice be colorful, varied,  and bountiful.
